Logistics & Technical

Kos is home to some of the best maritime infrastructure in the Dodecanese. The island features two primary nautical bases. First is Mandraki, the historic town harbor set right next to the castle, serving as an official port of entry where yachts moor stern-to the quay amid busy ferry traffic. The secondary and main technical base is the modern Kos Marina, located slightly to the east, providing full water, electricity, fuel, laid moorings, and comprehensive shipyard services. The island is exposed to the northerly Meltemi winds, making the southern bays of Kardamena and Kamari (Kefalos) the preferred, well-sheltered anchorages during strong northerlies. Navigators should expect choppy swells in the narrow channel between Bodrum and Kos.

Activities & Exploration

The most iconic activity is visiting the ancient ruins of the Asklepion, one of the ancient world's premier medical centers, located 4 km from the town. Culture & Nature

Kos features a generous natural landscape with vast fertile plains, miles of sandy coastlines, and rich vegetation, making it one of the flattest and greenest islands in the Dodecanese. Its cultural identity is a fascinating historical mosaic shaped by Ancient Greek, Roman, Knights of St. John, Ottoman, and Italian architectures. The Ottoman mosques (Defterdar and Loizia) standing right next to the ancient Agora ruins and Italian-era neoclassical public buildings give the town a unique cultural depth.

Personal Insight

Captain's Note

“
"Sailing out of Bodrum and heading into the bustling waters of Kos is the most classic and enjoyable route between the two neighboring coasts. Stay alert to the heavy swells generated by commercial ferries when approaching Mandraki town harbor; if you prefer a perfectly comfortable and secure night, head straight to Kos Marina. In the evening, raising your ouzo glass toward the distant lights of Bodrum while enjoying local Possa cheese is an unforgettable contrast at sea."
